Hi Nordic Skiers, I hope everyone has been able to get out and enjoy the consistently good Nordic skiing conditions this month. Here are a few things that are happening in our Nordic world right now.
Membership Record! Our membership now sits at 109, which is an all time club record since we formed in 2013. Okay, the previous record was 108, but it still counts. Welcome to the many new members, and thanks to everyone who has supported the Club by joining.
Glenn Bond Locals’ Camp coming up February 13-14 Interest in Nordic skiing is surging and Glenn’s first two Sun Peaks camps were completely sold out, so for the first time he’s offering a third camp this season here. This is an opportunity for any level of skier to gain skill in either classic or skate skiing in a Covid-friendly environment. Every bit of technique improvement makes the sport that little bit easier and therefore more fun and rewarding! More information here.
The Destination Challenge is Underway We have six teams and three solo contestants in this year’s Destination Challenge. This Challenge is a longstanding club tradition, which is back after a hiatus last year. Thanks for Brenda and Sue for bringing it back to life by offering to organize it! In keeping with pandemic times, this year’s theme is “Closer to Home” with skiers virtually covering the distance from Sun Peaks to several destinations around BC. There are some big kilometres being logged, in fact in the first 4 weeks of the challenge, the participants have logged a whopping total of 9,189 kms! Great to see everyone getting out so much.
National Distance Challenge So it seems Nordiq Canada (formerly Cross Country Canada), our national organization, is getting in on the act, too, and is putting on a National Distance Challenge. There are prizes, and not just for the biggest distance covered. It costs $10 to enter and you have to be a Nordiq Canada member (which you automatically are if you belong to SPNC). Check it out here.
Individual Challenges Whether you’re in the Destination Challenge or not, the club also has several Individual Challenges (not to be confused with participating in the Destination Challenge as a solo participant). Ski up Holy Cow, Ski your age in a day (or 100 minus your age if you’re over 50) and other fun fitness challenges can be completed on your own time, and new this year, can be logged on line for bragging rights! More information here.
Jackrabbits is going well! We’re having a great season with enthusiastic kids and coaches. Everyone is doing well adapting to the Covid-required changes in the program and so far we have been able to deliver the fundamental parts of the program almost as in a normal year.
And…We have a new Treasurer! A big shout out to Tammy Ulmer who has taken on the very important job of Club Treasurer! The position has been vacant since March, not a good situation, but Tammy has kindly come to our rescue. Speaking of money, we do have a modest surplus in our account. If anyone has some ideas for a suitable project we could use this money for, please email the Club at email@example.com.
