Sign-up for the 2020-21 season is now closed For the first time in club history we have had to put a cap on our numbers. This was not undertaken lightly, but even with our current numbers we are stretched to the limit to provide a satisfactory and Covid-safe experience for the kids. WE WILL NEED MORE COACHES FOR NEXT YEAR! The program can't run without our volunteer coaches. Demand for our program has been higher this year, and our Covid-19 protocols limit group sizes, so if you can possibly help, please consider this. Looking ahead to next year we expect continued high demand and would like to accommodate the increased numbers if at all possible, but this will require expanding our roster of coaches. You do not need previous coaching experience or high level skiing skills, just an enthusiasm for the sport, a desire to see our kids exposed to it, and a willingness to get some training. Training is paid for by the Club, and the initial levels can be completed online on your own schedule. The higher levels require attendance at a live course, which usually takes up most of a weekend, but the bonus is you get technique pointers as part of this. We are hoping to host a course here at Sun Peaks next fall. For more information watch this page or please contact our coaching coordinator Ann Carter at firstname.lastname@example.org
Please note that, due to Covid Safety requirements, some aspects of the 2020-21 program will change from previous years. We won't have access to the Nordic Centre, so sessions will start and end outside, at the east end of P5, (the end furthest from the Nordic Centre). Unfortunately the juice and cookies social time at the end of the morning can't happen this year. We also won't be able to have the House Parent system, so all participating kids will need have a parent or other designated responsible adult available on short notice to come to get a child who needs to leave a session early due to cold, fatigue etc.
2020-2021 Season Program Information: Skill Development Program (Jackrabbits) 12 week training program for SPNC members Saturday, December 5th, 2020 through to Saturday, Feb 27th, 2021 from 9:30 to 11:30 am
Our program follows the Cross Country Canada Skill Development Program for children. Our program is directed at young skiers between the ages of 4 – 18, who want to learn the basics of cross country skiing, both classic and skating, aiming to instill a lifelong interest in the sport and enhance health and quality of life. This program helps children develop confidence, provides them with an opportunity to ski and socialize with their ski friends, builds physical literacy and develops outdoor winter safety skills in a fun environment. As part of the program we also offer introductory sessions in biathlon, using high tech battery-powered laser rifles (no bullets!) for kids aged 9 and up, (parental permission required). Our program offers coaching for Bunnyrabbits (age 4-5), Jackrabbits (age 6-9), Track Attack (age 10-12) and Youth (age 13-18). All our coaches have full NCCP certification. Registration fees: Bunnies – $70 Jackrabbits – $85 Track Attack – $105 Youth – $105
Please note that in order for a child to register in the program, both the child and at least one parent must be members of the Sun Peaks Nordic Club. Contact our coordinator (below) with any questions. Equipment Rental: Skis, boots and poles (classic and skate) are available for rental for $60 per season (includes both classic and skate). This year, due to Covid limitations, the equipment will be issued for the full season. This means ready access for the kids to go skiing whenever they like (skiing to school, anyone??), but everyone must bring equipment with them to the sessions and be aware whether it's a skating or classic session and bring the appropriate skis! Jackrabbit Coordinators: Peggy Leduc has generously agreed to take over the coordinator this season. Contact her at email@example.com.
